You can feel the music while only
seeing the trumpet.
What a musician does.

Chuck Berry passed away yesterday. He was 90. He was a favorite of mine, have several albums and saw him in concert at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. (Photograph above from a concert at the Capitol.) My favorite memory goes back to when I discovered his music. I was in Woolworth’s in Paterson, NJ with my best friend, a musician. We were thumbing through the record albums (I’m talking vinyl) and I found my first Chuck Berry one. Excited, I turned to my buddy and asked, “Who’s the black guy?” He couldn’t stop laughing. In the 1970’s I made Super 8mm movies with my friends. I used Chuck Berry’s music as the soundtrack to them. I loved his music. Still do. Still have that album where I discovered he was a black guy.
Several years ago I had the pleasure of photographing the Count Basie Orchestra. Photographs were made both backstage and during concert. It was simply one of the absolute best concerts I have ever attended.
While strolling through Washington Square Park in New York City,
you might spot a piano player. What amazes me is this man’s ability
to transport his piano from his apartment to the park.
For me, this is a “serious” street musician.
In 2005 I spent the year photographing my children.
