…don’t need you anymore…

Father's Day

Someone said, “Parents need to raise their children
so when they become adults, they don’t need you anymore.”
An unintended consequence I found is “I still need them“.
This Sunday is Father’s Day.
Happy Father’s day to all the Dads.

Mel’s Drive-In

Mel's Drive In, Restaurant, Diner, San Francisco, California

Before George Lucas changed the American Film landscape with Star Wars, he made American Graffiti. A story set in the 1950’s starring an ensemble cast that included Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss and Harrison Ford (aka Hans Solo). The action takes place in California during one night and Mel’s Drive-In is featured prominently in the narrative. The photograph above was taken in San Francisco.

Recently my son and his girlfriend had a weekend getaway to the city and I mentioned Mel’s. They stopped in for a meal.

San Francisco Cable Car

San Francisco Cable Car

Traveling on a  San Francisco cable car is  part of the experience,
but imagine being the cable car operator. You not only have to operate
antique machinery, but you also have to warn knuckleheads who come
dangerously close to losing a limb.

The Living Planet.
The Earth breathes at Hverarond by Lake Myvatn in Northern Iceland.
The steam has a very strong sulfur smell.
My daughter with her face wrapped in a scarf
to lessen the odor, takes some photographs of the traveling mist.

The Blue Lagoon

blue lagoon, iceland

The Blue Lagoon is a very popular tourist attraction in Iceland. From their website – “The Blue Lagoon was formed in 1976 during operation at the nearby geothermal power plant. In the years that followed, people began to bathe in the unique water and apply the silica mud to their skin.”
At the time we arrived (my wife, daughter and myself) it was 55 degrees outside. Freezing. I was literally shaking. I jumped into the “indoor section” of the lagoon just to warm up. When Deb and Ashley appeared, I followed them to the exterior lagoon, shivering along the way. We all very quickly got in. It was wonderfully warm.
We floated around for a period, soaking in the warmth as the mist surrounded us. Some areas of the lagoon were warmer than others. That’s where we stood.
Eventually we made our way to the “facial mask” area and applied the stuff. Obviously, I put too much on. We soaked in the geothermal water for an hour. We exited the pool, first standing in a waterfall to wash us.  We dressed, exited the building, hopped in the car and headed to our destination – the Hotel Ork in Hveragedi.
